Gift to MHS Reflects Love of Dobermans

Gayle ChuWhen Gayle Chu moved to the Bay Area to attend college, she became friends with a fellow student and decided to move to New York with her after graduation to begin her career as a nutritionist. Little did Gayle know that this friend's brother, Thomas, would become her husband and bring her back to the Bay Area.

They ultimately settled in Novato and became avid lovers of Doberman Pinschers, bringing nine into their home over the years.

"They were quite a handful at times, but they brought us a great deal of happiness over the years," Gayle says. "We had a long streak of Dobermans and each of them was special in their own way."

Because of the Dobermans, Gayle visited MHS for 48 consecutive years.

"I only went to the front desk to renew their licenses," she shares, "but saw a lot of happy adopters heading home with their new companions."

When Gayle and her husband were planning for the future, they looked back and agreed that their beloved dogs were an important part of their lives.

"It is never an easy discussion to have, but both of us felt that our dogs brought us a lot of joy over the years. We don't have close family and thought that the Marin Humane Society could do so much for people and animals. We agreed that this would be our legacy," she says.

Thomas passed away in November 2012. Since then, Gayle set up a charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT) using appreciated securities to bene t MHS. She became a member of the MHS Legacy Society and attended Woofstock and MHS's gala, "For the Love of Animals."

"It has been a lot of fun but also a great opportunity to learn more about the great work being done by MHS. I feel really good about helping animals and people nd happiness," she says.
